My experience with DNA testing
My participation in the Family Tree DNA Project as well as Mic Barnette's new DNA site, 23andMe and the National Geographic Project, has revealed a connection to a large line of Barnetts who settled in North Carolina and South Carolina; among those Barnetts were Spratts, Jacks, Meriweathers, Crawfords and many others who intermarried. Shelly Barnett Carson, a 3rd cousin has done a great deal of research along these lines.
This has been an exciting and informative experience for me. I have learned that I have connections with several Barnett researchers whose work I have been reading for years, as well as meeting new cousins. I met Allan Barnett in Illinois and Betty Barnett Haslett in Kentucky. While there, I visited with Carol Kenney Lovitt.
The results so far have been sometimes elusive and other times very enlightening. I recently found a DNA connection with someone who lives about an hour away from me. Barbara Pettet's mother was a Barnett and we live 10 miles apart and visit libraries together.
I look forward to exploring this further as new test results are posted.
My most recent finding is a DNA match with a McCoy from Pike Co., Kentucky. I had just watched one of many documentaries on Appalachia, and they were talking about the Hatfield McCoy feud.
I emailed my match and he said he was from that family.

New DNA match: ggrandson of Randall McCoy
Between 1880 and 1891, the feud claimed more than a dozen members of the two families, becoming headline news around the country and compelling the Governors of both Kentucky and West Virginia to call up the United States National Guard to restore order after the disappearance of dozens of bounty hunters sent to calm the bloodlust. The Hatfields claimed more lives than the McCoys did by the time order had been restored.
