After learning that my brother's DNA matches a large family of Barnetts in North & South Carolina, I did some research on those states. (much more has been done by Shelly Carson) Any information anyone has on these Barnetts would be very helpful. It is a large and confusing family. Many of them went to the Carolinas, Georgia and then to TN, AL and not sure where else. Barnetts married into the Spratt, Jack, Merriweather, Crawford & numerous other families.
Which Pennsylvania Barnett went to North or South Carolina? Or is the connection back in Ireland or Scotland....
Shelly & I have found several wills which I hope will supply clues.

William Barnett, Jr., b. abt. 1730, d. March 1778 in Mecklenburg County, NC. His first wife is not known. His 2nd wife was named Margaret ? (In William's son William's will, he names his step-mother, Margaret….)
Children of William Barnett taken from his will of 12 Mar 1778, probated in the April 1778 court:
1. Abraham Barnett, married Mary Brownfield. Abraham was a "Justice" in the Capt. James McRee District. He was left property of 200 acres near Kings Mountain in his father's will.
2. Samuel Barnett, left 200 acres on the east side of the Broad River (Little Broad River) in his father's will.
3. Thomas Barnett,. Will left him 75 acres on Kings Branch adj. Col. Polk. (Kings Branch empties into Sugar Creek north of Pineville near between Arrowood Rd. and Westinghouse Blvd. There was an old Barnett Cemetery in this area that has been moved. In August 1773, William and his wife Margaret sold to Thomas two tracts of land. One was for 20 lbs. money, land on both sides of Sugar Creek adj. Selwyn's line, granted to said William Barnet on 31 Mar 1753. This deed was witnessed by John McRee and John Johnston. The other tract deeded on the same date as above for 100 lbs. money, land adj. James Sprott, William Barnett, John McDowell of 356 acres. It was witnessed by _ McRee and Peter Johnston.
4. Mary Barnett married an Elliott
5. Ruth Barnett - nothing known of her
6. Ann Barnett - nothing known of her.
7. William Barnett, b. 1758, d. 23 August 1785 married Mary McCree (McRee). William and his brother James, got 200 acres of the "old tract" and 350 acres on Sugar Creek. It is believed that this property also contained a mill. There is a reference in the court records dated October 1778 that the "Charleston Road overseer be Robert Campbell for the road from the "bridge at William Barnetts Mill inclusive to Kings Branch" This mill probably belonged to his father William. William has a will dated 12 Aug 1785 in which he leaves to step-mother, Margaret an his son Will (William) and daughter Polly. (Mary Ann?). William and his wife Mary McRee, b. 1764, d. 11 Apr 1785, are buried at Steele Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery. There is a Coat of Arms on his tombstone there.
8. James Barnett - nothing further known about James other than he shared property from his father's will with his brother William above.
9. Elizabeth Barnett - nothing further known
10. Margaret Barnett - May be the 13 year old child buried at Steele Creek Presbyterian, b. 1763 d. April 17, 1781.
The executors of old William's will were Abraham Barnett, his son and Robert McKnight. It is possible that Robert McKnight was either a son-in-law or a brother-in-law. William also remembered an apprentice of his named David Rea in his will.
ROBERT BARNETT AND HIS WIFE CATHERINE
It is not known whether Robert was a brother of the above William or a son not named in his will, which is probably unlikely.
Robert and his wife Catherine deed property on the north Fork of Steele Creek on 15 July 1771 to John Neely (250 acres). The deed stated the property was granted to William Barnet on 24 April 1762 then conveyed to Robert Barnett 20 April 1763. The deed was witnessed by James Elliott and Thomas Neely. This would raise the questions of whether Catherine was an Elliott or a Neely since the wife usually had a witness by her kin (father, brother, uncle, etc.)
Another interesting note is found in the old "Potts Papers". The handwritten notice is as follows: " (not legible).. of July past Catharine Barnett wife of Robt Barnett of Steel Creek without any lawful cause or provocation eloped from her husband the sd Robt Barnett. These are therefore to warn all persons whom it may concern not to credit the sd Catharine Barnett on my account as I will not pay any book debts - (illegible) - or notes of C. or any debts that she may contract or may have contracted since the first day of her elopement. Given under my hand this 6th day of October A.D. 1797. (It is presumed that the date she left Robt Barnett was July, 1797, since the note refers to (blank) of July past.
THOMAS BARNETT & ANN GRAHAM
Ann Graham was the daughter of James Graham and his 2nd wife, Mary Barber who were married abt 1750 probably in PA.
Thomas Barnett and Ann Graham lived in the bounds of the Steele Creek congregation and they were the ancestors of the Price, Elm and other families of the area. Thomas was a soldier in the Revolutionary War and was a member of Gen. Joseph Grahams' Company of Charlotte. He was in the battle of Cowan's Ford Sept. 26, 1780. Thomas Barnett also fired the shot that killed Col. Hall of the British Army. He died in 1832 and is (supposedly) buried in Steele Creek Cemetery. Mrs. Barnett died near Jackson, TN in 1841. Their children were: 1. Nancy Barnett, b. 4 Jan 1790 married Isaac Price
2. Ann Barnett b. July 25, 1791
3. Thomas Barnett, b. April 5, 1793
4. Sarah Barnett, b. Dec 4, 1795 married Charles Elms
5. Elizabeth Barnett, b. Aug 4, 1797
6. John Barnett, b. March 1, 1799
7. George Barnett, b. May 16, 1801
8. Susan Barnett, b. Oct 15, 1803.
(The above Graham data is from the Price family papers and states that the data is copied from a book written by Maj. William Graham, son of Gov. Graham (written in pencil on the back of the book).
Thomas Barnetts will was probated in York County, SC. If he is buried in Steele Creek Cemetery, it is an unmarked grave.
The Price Family papers show that Thomas Spratt Barnett b. 1742, d. 1828 in York Co., SC (near the NC/SC line)probably just SW of what is now Pineville, married possibly 1st to Nancy McKnight and 2nd to Ann Graham, sister of Gen. Joseph Graham. Thomas Spratt Barnett was the son of William Barnett and Mary Spratt (sister of Thomas Spratt). Thomas may have been a brother to the William Barnett, above b. abt 1730.
Thomas Spratt Barnett's will was written in York Co., SC on 5 May 1828, and is in Case #9, File 376 of York Co., SC.
The children listed for Thomas and Ann Graham in these papers and from the will are: 1 Nancy Barnett married Isaac Price. Nancy was b. 4 Jan 1790, d. 26 Jan 1854. Her tombstone at Steele Creek Presbyterian states she was the daughter of Thomas and Ann Graham. Isaac Price was the son of Isaac Price, Sr. and Esther Bradley of Steele Creek.
2 Thomas Barnett, married ? and went to Mississippi
3. Ann Barnett married ? and went to TN
4 Sarah Barnett, b. 4 Dec 1795, d. 15 Feb 1882, married Charles Elms. Both are buried at Flint Hill Baptist Church in York Co., NC (near the Meck. Co. line) and his tombstone indicates he was a Patriot & Soldier of the Rev. War. He died in 1836. He was much older than Sarah.
5 Elizabeth G. Barnett, married a Meacham
6 John Barnett - Probably died before his father. Not in his father's will.
7 George G. Barnett, b. 16 May 1801 - never married
8. Susan Barnett, b. 15 Oct 1803.
Known children of Thomas Spratt Barnett and his 1st wife, Nancy McKnight were: 1. William Barnett died without children.
2 *Mary Barnett married Samuel McKee
3. *Katherine Barnett marred 30 May 1800 to Isaac Henrey. ** Mary and Katherine were twins**
There are other Barnetts of the 1700s in Mecklenburg County, but the above were the only Barnetts that seem to be connected to Steele Creek.
There was a Hugh Barnett, b. 1733, d. 24 Nov 1786 buried at Sugar Creek Presby whose will names his wife Susannah (probably 2nd wife) and children Robert, James, Hannah Barnett m. Michel Henderson, Margaret, Elizabeth, Agness, Mary Dorcus, John, Hugh, Jr. and Ann.
A Robert Barnett (probably son of above Hugh) b. 1750 buried at Sugar Creek 9 Sept 1830. married to Jinny ?, had children Marcus, James G. m. Deborah Montgomery, David Edwin m. Rebeckah Montgomery, Robert Franklin m. Mary T. Sample, Amos m. Catherine Porter, Milton, d. at age 24 in 1825, Jenny and Polly who married a Montgomery.
Another Hugh Barnett d. in 1799 and his will indicates his children were: Abel Barnett, Hugh Barnett, Jr. (who had a son Moses), Moses Barnett m. Martha ?, Mary, Sarah and Ruth Barnett m. McWhirter.
In York Co., SC lived Thomas Barnett, b. 1750, d. 18 Nov 1813, buried at Bethel Presby Church, married to Martha Patrick, 1753, d. 1804. Their children: William Barnett, Alexander Barnett, b. 10 Aug 1774, d. 18 May 1851, married Rachel Adams; Mary Barnett m. Joseph Clinton and Sinta (Cynthia?) Barnett b. 1787, d. 6 Aug 1824 mar. Robert McCarter. Buried at Bethel Presby. Cem.
There are many Barnetts in Mecklenburg Co. and York Co. It would take much more research to determine the relationships of each of them.

USA (some, possibly all Barnett lines originated in France)
quotation from family tree "Mine Yours and Ours," Patrick Jack b. 1678, by Pat & Paula Thayer:
"Patrick Jack was apparently among settlers who moved into Ireland during the plantation of Ulster, when land confiscated from the Earls of Tyconnell and Tyrone, who had been discovered in a plot against the Crown, was made available for re-settlement by the British Crown. The land (about 4,000,000 acres) in the northernmost province of Ireland was divided into estates of 1,000 - 2,000 acres and was granted to English and Scottish Protestants. The majority were Presbyterian dissenters re-settled to displace the Catholics and to make Ulster a Protestant community. The Ulster settlers became known as the Scotch-Irish. Although they did not intermarry with the Catholic Celts, they mingled freely with the other Protestant groups brought in for re-settlement, the English Puritans and the refugee French Huguenots (which the Jack family had been, for several generations in Scotland). The Scottish colonists were industrious farmers, merchants, weavers, artisans, and laborers, and under their efforts the land was made productive and wool and linen trades thrived. However, when the British Crown leases to the settlers expired, the rents were increased, and nothing was allowed for improvements to the land the settlers had contributed. Also, the British government began to persecute the Presbyterians and to enforce the law making the Anglican Church the State Church. All of these repressions caused unrest among the Scotch-Irish, and they began emigrating to America. The majority were poor, but some were well-to-do, and apparently the Jacks were among the latter....Patrick & Ellen were married at Ballykelly, Londonderry, Ireland. Their children were all born in Ireland. Patrick, as well as his his sons Patrick, Charles, Samuel, John and Matthew all apparently emigrated to eastern PA and other eastern areas (son Patrick to Mecklenburg, NC). However, son James Jack stayed on in Ireland, perhaps due to his business interests, or due to his wife and ties with her family?"
Excerpt from "History by J. K. Johnston"
"...a man prominent in the early history of Cumberland County and who rendered valiant service during the Revolutionary War.
As in the case of the Kilgores, the Jack Family was of staunch Protestant origin; therefore, the name Patrick in this family would appear unthinkable until explained in the following manner: James Jack, father of Captain Patrick Jack, lived first in Scotland, but later went to Ireland to escape religious persecution. On leaving Scotland he sold his property for a few pounds to an Irish servant by the name of Patrick O'Riley, with the understanding that when the persecutions of the Protestants should cease, the property should be returned. The persecutions having ended, the Jacks returned to Scotland and asked the servant under what conditions he would return the property. His reply was "If you ever have a son his name must be Patrick Jack." Naturally this was hard for them to consent to, as the Scotch never named anyone Patrick. Finally, however, they agreed and the name has been handed down to the present generation--their son, Patrick Jack, being born about 1730, in Chester County, Pennsylvania; his father, James Jack, and family having immigrated about the same year to Pennsylvania, first settling near Green Spring along the Conodoguinet Creek.
Washington Irving, in his 'Life of Washington' refers to Captain Patrick Jack and his band of forest rangers as follows: 'At the instance of Governor Morris, the services of Captain Jack were secured. The band of settlers was composed of resolute men, well acquainted with the country, and inured to hardships. Captain Jack, one of the most remarkable characters of Pennsylvania, was a hero of the wilderness. He had been a captive among the Indians; and having learned their ways, had formed this association for the protection of the settlements, receving a commission of Captain from the Governor of Pennsylvania. The band had been famous for its exploits, and was a terror to the Indians. Captain Jack awas at present protecting the settlements on the Conococheague, but promised to march by a circuitous route and join Braddock with his rangers. They required no shelter for the night, and they asked no pay. If the whole army was composed of such men, there would be no cause for apprehension.During the halt of the Little Meadows,Captain Jack and his rangers made their appearance in cap; armed and equipped with rifle, knife, hunting shirt, leggins and moccasins, and looked almost like a band of Indians as they issued from the woods. The captain asked an interview with the General, by whom it would seem, he was not expected. Braddock received him in his tent, in his usual stiffand stately manner. Captain Jack spoke of himself and his followers as men inured to hardships and accustomed to eal wit Indians, who preferred stealth and stratagem to open warfare. He requested his company should be employed as a reconnoitering party, to beat up the Indians in the lurking places and ambuscades. Braddock, who had a sovereign contempt for the chivalry of the woods, and despised their boasted strategy, replied to the hero of the Pennsylvania settlements in a manner to which he had not been accustomed. There was time enough he said for making arrangements and he had experienced troops, on whom he could completely rely for all purposes. Captain Jack replied "Very well, I see you don't know how to fight Indians," then withdrew, indignant at so haughty a reception, and informed his leather-clad followers of his rebuff. They forthwith shouldered their rifles, turned their backs upon the camp, and headed by the Captain, departed in Indian file thorugh the wood, for the usual scene of their exploits, where men knew their value, the banks of Juniata or the Conococheague, there they left the history of their exploits. At one time you may hear of the band near Fort August, next at Fort Franklin, and then at London, then at Juniata--rapid were the movements of this hard band.
In the history of Huntington County the name of Captain Jack is frequently mentioned. He and Captain Scroogius were great friends and had many Indian fights in the mountains, one of which is still called Jack's Mountain, also the famous Jack's Narrows along the Juniata.
The Provincial Congress commissioned him a Colonel of a regiment at the battle of Brandywine in 1777. Had it not been for him and his regiment, Washington and perhaps his army also might have been captured. General Washington complimented him on the work he had done and urged him to accept the commission. Captain Jack refused, believing the services he had rendered his country was reward enough for him. He spent the remaining days of his life at his home in Cumberland County. He died January 25, 1821, ated 90 years. It is reasonably certain that a number of the Cumberland County Kilgores served under him in his varied campaign."

Charity Jack
The following data is extracted from Sketches Of Western North Carolina, Historical And Biographical Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.
Charity Jack, eldest daughter of Patrick Jack, of Charlotte, married Dr. Cornelius Dysart, a distinguished physician and surgeon of the Revolutionary army. The Dysart family, at that time, resided in Mecklenburg County. Dr. Dysart is said to have built the first house on the "Irwin corner," assisted by his brother-in-law, Captain Jack, who owned the lot until his removal to Georgia, shortly after the war. Dr. Dysart died comparatively young, leaving a widow and two children, James and Robert Dysart, who settled in Georgia. Of their subsequent history little is known. Jane (or "Jean,") Jack, second daughter of Patrick Jack, married William Barnett, son of John Barnett and Ann Spratt, of Scotch-Irish descent. The name Spratt is generally spelled "Sprot," or "Sproat," in the old records. Thomas Spratt is said to have been the "first person" who crossed the Yadkin river, "with wheels"; and his daughter Ann the "first child" born in the beautiful champaign Country between the Yadkin and Catawba rivers. He first intended to settle on Rocky River (now in Cabarrus County), but Indian disturbances occurring there near the time of his arrival, induced him to select a home in the vicinity of the place which afterward became the "town of Charlotte." At his humble dwelling, one mile and a half south of Charlotte, was held the "first Court" of Mecklenburg county. Abraham Alexander, the Chairman of the Mecklenburg Convention of the 20th of May, 1775, and Colonel Thomas Polk, its "herald of freedom" on the same occasion, were then prominent and influential members of this primitive body of county magistrates. Near the residence of Thomas Spratt is one of the oldest private burial grounds in the county, in which his mortal remains repose. Here are found the grave-stones of several members of the Spratt, Barnett and Jack families, who intermarried; also those of the Binghams, McKnights, and a few others. On the head-stone of Mary Barnett, wife of William Barnett, it is recorded, she died on the 4th of October, 1764, aged forty-five years. A hickory tree, ten or twelve inches in diameter, is now growing on this grave, casting around its beneficent shade. The primitive forest growth, once partially cut down, is here fast assuming its original sway, and peacefully overshadowing the mortal remains of these early sleepers in this ancient graveyard.
The descendants of William Barnett and Jane Jack were: 1. Annie Barnett, married James Jack, third son of Captain James Jack, of Mecklenburg memory, whose genealogy has been previously given. 2. Samuel Barnett, married, 1st, Eliza Joyner; descendants:
1. Jane Barnett, married A.S. Wingfield.
2. Sarah J. Barnett, married Alexander Pope, Sen. Descendants of Samuel Barnett (second marriage) and Elizabeth Worsham were:
1. Samuel Barnett (Washington, Ga.), married Elizabeth A. Stone. Descendants:
1. Annie Barnett, married Rev. William S. Bean.
2. Frank W.
3. Samuel (Davidson College.)
4. Osborne S. 5. Edward A.
6. Hattie A.; and
7. Susan Barnett.
The descendants of John Jack and Mary Barnett were:
1. Ann Jack, married Moses Wiley.
2. Mary A. Jack, married John J. Barnett.
3. Dr. Thomas Jack.
4. John Jack.
5. Samuel Jack, married Annie Leslie.
6. Susan Jack, married Alexander Bowie, formerly Chancellor of Alabama.
The descendants of Moses Wiley and Ann Jack were:
1. Leroy M. Wiley.
2. Mary Wiley, married Thomas Baxter.
3. Thomas Wiley.
4. Eliza Wiley, married Mr. Carnes.
5. Sarah Ann, married John R. Hays.
6. Laird Wiley; and
7. Jack Wiley.
The descendants of Susan Barnett and George W. Smart were five children, of whom only two arrived at the years of maturity, Albert W. and Thomas B. Smart.
George W. Smart represented Mecklenburg county in the House of Commons in 1805, and again in 1808. He died in May, 1810. Mrs. Smart survived her husband many years, and was one of the "remarkable women" of her age. She was long known and highly esteemed in Mecklenburg and surrounding country for her general intelligence, ardent piety, and retentive memories of Revolutionary events. At the great gathering of delegates and people in Charlotte, on the 20th of May, 1775, she was present (then thirteen years old), and still retained a distinct recollection of some of the thrilling scenes of that memorable occasion, not the least of which was "the throwing up of hats," in the universal outburst of applause, when the resolutions of independence were read by Colonel Thomas Polk, from the Court-house steps.
She died on the 28th of November, 1851, aged ninety years, and is buried, with other members of the family, in a private cemetery on her own farm, nine miles from Charlotte, on the Camden road. It should be stated, the grandfather of L.M. Wiley and others, (John Jack) was "a cousin" and not a brother, as some have supposed, of Capt. James Jack, of Charlotte.
Our prescribed limits forbid a more extended genealogical, notice of the Barnett family and their collateral connections, many of whom performed a conspicuous part in the Revolutionary War. Capt. William Barnett was a bold, energetic officer, and was frequently engaged, with his brothers, and other ardent spirits of Mecklenburg, in that species of partisan warfare which struck terror into the Tory ranks, checked their atrocities, and gave celebrity to the dashing exploits of Col. Sumpter and his brave associates.

After "Bradock's Defeat" they joined a stream of emigrants southward through the Shenandoah Valley. Finally they made their way to a settlement on Rocky River, now Cabarrus Co., NC. Because of Indian problems, they soon moved to what is now Charlotte, NC. This was abt. 1740.
The tree sons of William Barnett mar three dau's of Thomas Spratt and Mary Clark who emigrated to USA from N. Ire. abt yr 1731, along with William Barnett Sr. and family.
William Barnett Jr. b 1715 Co,. Down Ulster Province N. Ire. d 1778 in Charlotte, NC

end of Sec 1 page 3... Next; William Barnett Sr. b 1690.
With so many names of William, John, James, Thomas etc., you will have to pick up on their birth years to connect them to succeeding lines.
I am just listing info as I have come across it but the ***** will connect you to our line of Thomas Sr. b 1720 to Thomas Jr. b 1750/55 who mar to Martha Patrick.
The other is for anyone else who can connect here as all are related at some point in past time.
Thanks all of you for considering the info. Nothing is perfect especially in genealogy, but it needs to be shown..."
